On November 27, 2024, the New York State Police responded to assist Carmel Police Department on Interstate 84 at approximately 10:35 a.m. with a subject fleeing a domestic incident.
The suspect, identified by Carmel Police Department as Noel J. Mendez Jr., age 47, of Fairview, NJ, operating a rented 2024 Chevrolet Express van had allegedly struck several marked Carmel units intentionally while fleeing the domestic incident. Troopers caught up with the pursuit on Interstate 84 and followed the suspect vehicle onto the Taconic State Parkway southbound. Mendez struck multiple uninvolved vehicles before exiting the parkway into the Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park. Mendez drove off-road in the park despite pedestrians before returning to the Taconic State Parkway traveling northbound. From the Taconic State Parkway, he exited onto Route 6, then Strawberry Lane and finally Oscawana Lake Road. On Oscawana Lake Road Troopers initiated contact with the suspect vehicle and terminated the pursuit. Mendez was then taken into custody without any further incident.
Mendez was subsequently arrested for Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd degree, Criminal Mischief in the 4th degree, and Reckless Driving, all misdemeanors.
Mendez was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Putnam Valley Court on January 21, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., and release to the custody of Carmel Police Department.
