Verona, NY – A dangerous intersection along Route 365 and Blackman Corners Road is finally getting much-needed safety improvements as part of a $3 million state project aimed at modernizing traffic signals across the Mohawk Valley.
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced that new illuminated warning signs and flashing beacons will be installed at the intersection, a notorious site for serious motor vehicle accidents. The improvements are part of a larger effort to enhance traffic safety at six locations across Oneida, Herkimer, and Montgomery counties.
Verona Town Supervisor Scott Musacchio has been advocating for enhanced traffic control for years, citing the intersection’s poor visibility and history of fatal crashes. “It’s such a dark intersection, and it can be very treacherous,” Musacchio said. “We’re very excited that they’re going to do something.”
What’s Changing?
Flashing “Entering Traffic” warning signs on both sides of Route 365
Illuminated stop signs on Blackman Corners Road
Poles with camera/radar units for enhanced multi-sensor detection
Route 365 is a four-lane divided highway, and currently, Blackman Corners Road has only a two-way stop sign, leaving cross-traffic vulnerable. The new warning lights will alert high-speed drivers on Route 365 to vehicles entering from Blackman Corners.
More Safety Upgrades Coming
The project will also bring similar improvements to intersections at:✅ Route 365 & Taylor Road (Trenton)✅ Route 365 & Prospect Depot Road (Trenton)✅ West Winfield & Ilion
Bidding for the project was set for late February, with construction expected to follow soon after.
