State Officials Stress Need for Safe Driving
New York State officials underscored the importance of enforcement initiatives in preventing traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
Mark J.F. Schroeder, Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC), stated, “The results of this campaign show the need for these enforcement efforts. Making the right decision is easy—plan for a sober ride home. It’s not worth the risk of an arrest, injury, or death.”
New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James reaffirmed law enforcement’s commitment to roadway safety, adding, “The injuries and deaths caused by impaired and drunk drivers are completely preventable. Through education and enforcement, we will continue to discourage, detect, and arrest impaired motorists.”
Enforcement Efforts Continue Year-Round
This Super Bowl enforcement campaign is part of a series of statewide initiatives led by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes. Similar targeted patrols and sobriety checkpoints are conducted around major holidays, including St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and the year-end holiday season.
James Quattrone, Chautauqua County Sheriff and President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, commended responsible drivers while acknowledging the dangers posed by impaired motorists: “Millions of people made the smart decision not to drive impaired. Unfortunately, some still put others at risk. Law enforcement took action to remove these dangerous drivers from our roads.”
