Town of Lake Pleasant, NY – A frigid night on Mason Lake turned into a tense search-and-rescue mission when a 70-year-old snowmobiler from New Jersey became separated from his riding group on Feb. 28.

A Snowy Search Begins

At 8:20 p.m., Hamilton County Dispatch alerted Forest Rangers Hamm and O’Connell to the missing rider, who had last been seen experiencing mechanical issues on the lake. By the time he got his snowmobile moving again, he had lost his group and was alone in the wilderness.

Despite the Rangers’ initial search, darkness, snow, and heavy winds made it nearly impossible to track the missing man. Concerned for his safety in the freezing temperatures, Rangers requested backup, bringing in Rangers Miller and Scott to expand the search into Indian Lake.

A Race Against Time

With New York State Police and the Indian Lake Fire Department joining the effort, rescuers scoured the area deep into the night. At 12:30 a.m., a faint set of tracks finally led Rangers Miller and Scott to the missing snowmobiler on the east shore of the lake.

The rider was cold but safe. Rangers quickly replaced his snowmobile’s drive belt and assisted him to Lake Shore Road, where Indian Lake EMS evaluated his condition.

Prepared for the Unexpected

This rescue highlights the importance of sticking with a group while riding in remote areas and ensuring snowmobiles are in good working order before heading out. Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of New York’s Forest Rangers and emergency responders, this night ended safely for the lost snowmobiler.

🚨 Stay safe this winter! Always carry a charged phone, emergency supplies, and a GPS device when exploring the backcountry.
