Hamilton College Awarded $750,000 Grant to Establish American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program, Honoring 1793 Commitment

Hamilton College has received a $750,000 grant to launch a new American Indian and Indigenous Studies program, fulfilling a historic commitment made by the institution in 1793. This program, aimed at enhancing the college’s academic offerings and fostering a deeper understanding of Native American history and culture, will be an important addition to the college’s curriculum.

The grant, awarded by a philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting educational initiatives, will help fund the development of courses, faculty appointments, and resources for the new program. This is a major step toward Hamilton’s ongoing efforts to honor its early history, which includes a commitment made more than two centuries ago to educate Native Americans, as part of its founding principles.

Hamilton College’s 1793 commitment was a pledge to provide educational opportunities for Native American students. The establishment of the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program is a modern interpretation of that commitment, aiming to not only educate Native American students but also provide all students with a comprehensive understanding of Native American experiences, histories, and contemporary issues.

The new program will offer a multidisciplinary approach, blending history, culture, political science, anthropology, and literature to provide a well-rounded perspective on Indigenous peoples. Courses will focus on the history and culture of Native American communities, their contributions to society, and the challenges they face today. The program will also encourage research, collaboration, and partnerships with Native American communities and organizations.

“We are excited to bring this program to life and continue the legacy of our 1793 commitment,” said Hamilton College President David Wippman. “This grant will enable us to build a program that not only enhances our academic offerings but also enriches the lives of our students by deepening their understanding of Indigenous cultures and histories.”

The new American Indian and Indigenous Studies program will also help diversify the campus community, attract students interested in Native American studies, and provide support and opportunities for Indigenous students. The program is expected to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment for all students, promoting respect and understanding for Indigenous peoples and their contributions to society.

The development of this program is part of Hamilton College’s broader efforts to strengthen its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice. By creating spaces for marginalized voices and perspectives, Hamilton is working to ensure that its students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them to be informed, empathetic, and engaged citizens of the world.

Through this initiative, Hamilton College is taking a meaningful step toward honoring its historical roots while contributing to the ongoing conversation about Indigenous rights, recognition, and representation in education and beyond.
