Late in the evening on March 10, 2024, the State Police in Oneida received a distressing call about a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. The accident happened on State Route 365, close to Stoney Brook Road, in the town of Verona, Oneida County. According to the police report, a 2017 Chevrolet Express Van driven by Mark E. Thompson, a 55-year-old resident of Rome, NY, was heading eastward on State Route 365 when the incident occurred.
The pedestrian, Tyler M. Atkinson, a 25-year-old from Oneida, NY, was walking along the road's shoulder when he accidentally stepped into the lane of travel and was hit by the express van. The force of the impact was so severe that Atkinson had to be rushed to Oneida Health Emergency Room. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the medical facility.
Thompson, on the other hand, emerged from the accident unscathed. A State Police Drug Recognition Expert conducted a test at the scene, and Thompson tested negative for any alcohol or drug impairment.
The State Police were quick to respond to the incident and were assisted by other law enforcement agencies such as the Oneida County Sheriff's Office and the Oneida Indian Nation Police. EMS personnel were also present to provide immediate medical care to the victim.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the authorities are working tirelessly to gather more information about the accident.
