PHILMONT, NY – A shocking case of elder fraud has rocked the community as New York State Police arrested two Philmont residents for stealing thousands from an elderly victim’s bank account and food stamp benefits.

Investigators from SP Livingston revealed that Samantha Mowris, 46, a home health aide, and Christopher Nardone, 43, carried out a calculated scheme to drain the victim’s finances after they were placed into a nursing home in September 2024.

According to authorities, Mowris fraudulently wrote multiple checks from the victim’s account, stealing over $2,220. She also misused the victim’s food stamp card, racking up $690 in purchases at various stores. But she didn’t act alone. Investigators say Nardone played a crucial role, cashing the forged checks.

The duo’s crime spree came to an abrupt end when law enforcement uncovered the fraudulent transactions. Mowris and Nardone now face a long list of charges, including:

Mowris' Charges:

  • Grand Larceny (3rd & 4th Degree)

  • Burglary (2nd Degree)

  • Petit Larceny (2 counts)

  • Possession of a Forged Instrument (5 counts)

  • Falsifying Business Records (1st Degree)

  • Identity Theft (2nd Degree)

  • Conspiracy (5th Degree)

Nardone's Charges:

  • Petit Larceny

  • Possession of a Forged Instrument (3 counts)

  • Conspiracy (5th Degree)

The pair was arraigned in Greenport Town Court and are scheduled to return on March 17, 2025.

As authorities continue cracking down on elder fraud, this case serves as a chilling reminder: not everyone entrusted with care has good intentions.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing case.
